چکیده

In the present work, the survivability of a submerged structure against loads, imposed by the operational environment, such as hydrostatic pressure is presented. The structure under consideration is a component (buffer bell) of a system called DIFIS that recovers fuel from shipwrecks. It consists of two parts: the reservoir and the floater. The floater is the part that produces the buoyancy force that holds the whole system in place and therefore its structural integrity is crucial for the safety of the structure. The floater is designed as a double hull structure made of steel plates and stiffeners. The task of the structural analysis is to ensure that the floaters’ double hulls are able to withstand the hydrostatic pressure due to the depth and maintain the needed buoyancy forces. In the present analysis, the strength of the hulls is evaluated for three different scenarios (operational, worst case and accident scenarios).

Enhanced Decision Making through Probabilistic Shipwreck Risk Assessment: Focusing on the Situation in Greece

The potential leakage of oil trapped in the hull of fully or partially submerged shipwrecks has been a growing concern worldwide mainly due to major uncertainties therein and the great potential for environmental damage. The high cost of either preventing or reacting to potential oil discharges from shipwrecks into the environment mandates the use of risk analysis methods in order to identify t...

Applying zoning method for numerical modeling of two immiscible fluid interface motion in an underwater tank using BEM

In this study, boundary element method was used to model sea wave propagation on a hemisphere shape under water tank and oil-water common surface oscillation in the tank. Also, kinematic and dynamic oundary conditions of free surface and common surface of oil and water were discritized by Finite difference method. There were some singularities in BEM method, which were removed by applying zonin...

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Hull Geometry Optimization Using a Multi-objective Algorithm Approach

Abstarct In this paper, a new approach to optimize an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) hull geometry is presented. Using this methode, the nose and tail of an underwater vehicle are designed, such that their length constraints due to the arrangement of different components in the AUV body are properly addressed. In the current study, an optimal design for the body profile of a torpedo-shaped...

Estimation of Sloshing Wave Height in Broad Cylindrical Oil Storage Tanks Using Numerical Methods

Cylindrical steel tanks are important components of many industrial plants such as oil refineries and chemical plants. Usually failure of cylindrical tanks leads to serious consequences. During the past earthquakes such as 1964 Alaska and 1999 Turkey seismic performance of cylindrical tanks revealed that tanks are seismically vulnerable. Therefore, evaluation of seismic performance of these str...

An oil outflow model for tanker collisions and groundings

In this paper we have developed an oil outflow model for collision and grounding accidents of tankers. The collision model explicitly links input variables such as tanker hull design (single or double), displacement and speed, striking vessel displacement and speed, and the interaction angle of both vessels to output variables: longitudinal and transversal damage extents of the tanker. Overlayi...
